The Castle Course is the newest addition to the famous St Andrews Links, officially opening in 2008 as the seventh course in the St Andrews collection. Designed by Scottish architect David McLay Kidd, it is positioned just a mile east of the town of St Andrews, perched high above the rugged coastline. The course offers stunning views over St Andrews Bay and the North Sea, with the dramatic landscape serving as both a challenge and a backdrop for a memorable round of golf.
At 6,759 yards from the back tees and with a par of 71, The Castle Course provides a challenging layout that blends traditional links features with the unique characteristics of its cliff-top setting. The design consists of two loops of nine holes that climb and descend the natural terrain. As the course winds toward the coast, the final holes bring golfers close to the cliffs, offering breathtaking vistas and heart-pounding shots.
The Castle Course takes its name from the nearby Kinkell Castle, once the residence of the Moneypenny family, a historical landmark that adds to the course’s deep connection to the region’s past. Although it’s the newest course in the St Andrews collection, it has quickly established itself as a modern classic, attracting golfers from around the world who are eager to experience both the course and its stunning views.
The clubhouse at The Castle Course provides a welcoming space to relax after a round. Its panoramic views of the course and surrounding coastline create a perfect environment for enjoying a meal or drink while reflecting on the day’s play. Golfers can also take advantage of a well-stocked pro shop, a practice range, a short-game area, and a putting green to hone their skills before heading out onto the course.
Although the Castle Course has not yet hosted major tournaments, its challenging layout and beautiful setting make it a must-play for those seeking a new golfing experience in the home of golf. The course’s proximity to the historic town of St Andrews only enhances the appeal, offering visitors the chance to explore the town’s rich golfing heritage.
